Dewi Sartika

Dewi Sartika is one of the most popular national heroes in Indonesia. She was the leading figure and pioneer for the education for women in Indonesia. She was born in Bandung, on 4 Desember 1884. Her parents name were R. Rangga Somanegara and R. A. Rajapermas. When she was a child, she often pretended to be a teacher while playing with her friends. She lived with her uncle after her father died. She received an education of Sundanese from her uncle.

On 16 January 1904, she built a school named Sekolah Isteri at Bandung Regency's Pendopo. In 1910, the school name changed to Sekolah Kaoetamaan Isteri and relocated to Jalan Ciguriang. In 1912, there were nine Sekolah Kaoetamaan Isteri in cities or regencyes in West Java. In September 1929, this school changed its name to Sekolah Raden Dewi.

She died on 11 September 1947 at Ccineam,Tasikmalaya while she was evacuating from Bandung due to independence war.

On 1 December 1966, she received Heroine of the National Movement title and her name is known as the street that was the place of her school.
